1994's TRUE LIES was one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most entertaining movies ever. Once upon a time, director James Cameron used to propose a sequel. The script was even ready for shooting, and the plan was to release the movie sometimes in 2002. But the sequel idea was eventually scrapped due to script problems deemed inappropriate because of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
"In this day and age, terrorism just isn't funny anymore" said Cameron during an interview about the abandoned sequel plans.
But on the other side, TRUE LIES co-star and good friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Arnold, has been saying that TRUE LIES 2 is happening. Over the years, a number of sequel scripts has been written but none of them really materialized.
Then came last year's news that the movie was being turned into a weekly TV series with WWE wrestler/actor John Cena possibly attached for the lead role. And now Tom Arnold has indicated that there is a very high chance for Arnold Schwarzenegger to make his longtime cinematic comeback since leaving office as governor of California.
Here are the excerpts of what he had to say about TRUE LIES 2:
"I have read a great TRUE LIES 2 script, and I hope we are able to do it. Knock on wood. Arnold Schwarzenegger is excited. I am excited".
Question: Ever since Arnold left office, he has been talking about what he wants to do in terms of his next movie. Do you think its actually a reality that you guys will do TRUE LIES 2?
Tom Arnold: Literally. We have both read the script. There is a script that James Cameron and a guy named Jeff Eastin, who created the TV show White Collar, wrote. It is really great. Jim can't direct it. But he can produce it. We hope it gets done. We have a few fun things we want to do. I am supposed to remain cool about this. For me, it would be a lot of fun to work with the guys again.
Question: Have you talked about who you might want to direct this time around?
Tom Arnold: There is a list of really good directors. There have always been people who were interested in doing it. I let those guys handle that. I put in my two cents.
TRUE LIES 2 is in development and nothing is really official as of now.
